Long ago, in a colorful town called Hamelin, there lived cheerful people who loved music, laughter, and busy market days. But one year, something terrible happened…

Rats.

They came from everywhere—under doors, through streets, into homes. They squeaked and scampered, eating food and scaring children. The people of Hamelin were worried and tired. No matter what they tried, the rats would not leave.

One sunny morning, a mysterious man arrived in town. He wore a bright coat of red and gold and carried a long, shiny flute.

“I can solve your problem,” he said calmly. “I will drive away all the rats. But you must promise to pay me when I am done.”

The mayor quickly agreed. “Of course! Just get rid of them!”

The man smiled and began to play his flute.

A magical melody filled the air—soft, sweet, and impossible to ignore. One by one, the rats came out of their hiding places. They followed the music, marching behind the Piper as if under a spell. The man led them through the streets, out of the town, and straight into the river, where they disappeared forever.

The town was saved!

But when the Piper returned for his reward, the mayor hesitated.

“That was easy work,” he said. “We don’t think it’s worth that much money.”

The Piper’s smile faded. “You made a promise,” he warned.

But the mayor refused to pay.

The Piper quietly left the town… but he returned the next day.

This time, he played a different tune.

It was even more beautiful—light and joyful. The children of Hamelin heard it and ran outside, laughing and smiling. They followed the Piper, dancing behind him as he walked away from the town.

Through fields and hills they went, until they disappeared beyond a distant mountain.

When the music stopped, the children were gone.

The town was silent. The parents cried and begged for their children to return, but it was too late.

The mayor realized his mistake. “We broke our promise,” he said sadly. “And now we must live with the consequences.”

From that day on, the people of Hamelin never forgot the lesson they had learned.

This story teaches children about responsibility, honesty, and the importance of keeping promises. It also gently introduces the idea that actions have consequences. You can talk with your child about why the mayor’s decision was wrong and how things could have turned out differently if he had kept his word.
