Far away in the icy land of Antarctica, where the wind whispered across the snow and the sea sparkled like a field of diamonds, lived a small penguin named Piko.
Piko was the smallest penguin in his colony. His feathers were soft and shiny, but his steps were tiny and slow. While the other penguins slid quickly on the ice and dove bravely into the ocean, Piko often stayed behind.
“I wish I were bigger and stronger,” Piko sighed one morning.
One day, the penguin colony gathered near the ocean to learn how to catch fish. The older penguins jumped into the water with confidence. Splash! Splash! They swam fast and caught shiny fish.
Piko looked at the deep blue sea and felt nervous.
“What if I can’t swim well?” he whispered.
Just then, an old penguin named Grandpa Nori waddled over. His feathers were a little gray, and his eyes were kind.
“Why do you look so worried, little Piko?” Grandpa Nori asked gently.
“I’m too small,” Piko said sadly. “I think I will fail.”
Grandpa Nori smiled. “Being small does not mean being weak. Sometimes, small penguins notice things that others miss.”
Piko thought about these words.
Later that day, a strong wind began to blow. The waves grew bigger, and the fish swam closer to the shore where the water was calmer. But the bigger penguins were diving far away in the deep sea and could not see the fish near the rocks.
Piko waddled closer and peeked into the water.
“There are so many fish here!” he gasped.
Carefully, Piko jumped into the shallow water. Because he was small, he could swim easily between the rocks where the fish were hiding. Splash! Splash! Soon, he caught several fish.
Piko hurried back to the colony.
“Fish! Fish near the rocks!” he called.
The other penguins followed him and quickly found plenty of fish. That evening, everyone had a full belly and happy hearts.
The penguins gathered around Piko.
“You helped all of us today,” one penguin said.
“Yes,” said another. “Your small size helped you find the fish!”
Piko’s chest filled with pride.
Grandpa Nori smiled and said, “You see, Piko? Everyone has a special gift. When we believe in ourselves, even the smallest penguin can do something big.”
From that day on, Piko never wished to be bigger again. He knew that being small was part of what made him special.
And whenever a young penguin felt unsure, Piko would say with a warm smile:
“Remember… even a small penguin can make a big difference.”
